Today's College Tour

Today's college tour was a very interesting way for the counseling department to get its point across. I knew that counseling services where available on here on campus but i didn't know that they really meant that we could talk to them about everything. In this skit, there were some one who was struggling with a parents divorce, a homosexual who was being denied a job only because of their sexuality, and many more examples. Although it was a stretch of how many people may really act it showed that no matter what the circumstance was there was always some one their to listen to their problems.

Benefits of a Liberal Arts Program

Have ever wanted to be in college, but at the same time didn't know what you wanted to be? Well, this is very common for individuals to come to college and have no idea as to what they want to be. Many may think that they would just be waisting time but in reality it is really kind of smart to enter college with this mind set. This mind set that allows you to do this is called Liberal Arts. This is a very beneficial way to come to college and meet new people, and explore different types of career fields. Having a liberal arts education may give you the upper on those who may have went to a larger university. Because the student to teacher ratio is much lower your professors are forced to be more concerned about your education.

My Goals For the Spring Semester

Ok, i am finally done with my first college semester! Yay me....although i was adjusting to getting use to college life i know that i did not focus on my school studies as much as i should have. The thing that got me was being content with B- i thought that it was ok because i had a B. But in all reality a B- is only a couple of points higher than a C+. This semester i had an A, 2 B's, a B- and a C. Well to a student that is "average" this sounds like an ok first semester. My grades were not horrible but i was still standing at a 2.9. In my eyes and my moms eyes this is just not acceptably. I told myself that this was not acceptable and i was going to do something to improve my grades. I started this off by taking a J-term and passing with an A+. This spring i am forcing myself to stay on a schedule, and strive to make only A's and A+''s to get my GPA back to its potential.

College Drinking

The perception of the average college student is, they get wasted on a regular basis. Before coming to Lees McRae and actually experiencing the college life, i too believed this myth. As the years have progessed, the presence of alcohol has been on a rise; you see it in movies and advertisments. The actual truth is 90% of college students do not let alcohol use interfere with academics. This does not mean that 90% of students do not drink, it means that they drink( in a sense) "responsibly".
In class we talked about possible ways to try and decrease the rate of accidents or ways that we could possibly decrease drinking period. Personally I liked the thought of the safe driving program. It would be when students volunteer to be designated drivers to and from parties or clubs. This is one possible way to eliminate drunk driving.

Mountain Day

Have you ever heard the phrase "Tradition"....Well throughout your college years you will find out that many of the organizations or groups that you may become part of will have traditions or things that they do every year at a certain time. Here at Lees McRae one tradition is to have Mountain Day. This is a day where (1) all classes are cancelled, (2 )you get to have a day to get to know more classmates and meet new people, and (3) help in the community while also converting back to your youth years. Mountain Day happens twice a year, in the fall and in the spring. Although I am a freshman, they have explained that the one that happens in the fall is usually the fun day...where you just get to play games, enjoy the scenery of the school, and take pictures. While the Mountain Day in the Spring is more of a service learning day. Where you still have fun, while helping or renovating our school.
